Tourism Adventure Trail Assessment Consultant

About the role

Strongim Bisnis, an Australian Government-funded private sector development program in the Solomon Islands, is looking for a consultant to assess five selected tourism trails or potential sites. The consultant will report to the Partnership Technical Lead and work with the tourism technical team. The field work is based in late November or early December 2026 and lasts about 20 days.

Key responsibilities

• Experience each proposed trail or visitor route under normal visitor conditions, with local guides where available, then spend a day consulting customary chiefs, landowners, trail operators and community representatives.
• Assess routes, access, trail condition and length, points of interest, interpretation, guiding, facilities, signage, safety risks and required infrastructure.
• Discuss land access and permissions, community expectations, guide capacity, visitor management and maintenance.
• Assess visitor appeal, target markets, pricing and operating costs, and opportunities for local businesses to earn income.
• Consider distinctive nature-based or volcanic experiences and specialised tourism markets or events.
• Prepare a concise report with strengths, constraints, prioritised recommendations, indicative cost ranges and potential environmental impacts and mitigation.

Required profile

• Practical experience developing, assessing or managing hiking trails, nature-based tourism products or similar visitor experiences.
• Experience working with local communities, customary landowners, tourism operators and government stakeholders.
• Knowledge of trail safety, guiding standards, visitor experience design and low-cost infrastructure.
• Experience in tourism product development, pricing, marketing and commercially sustainable operating models.
• Ability to turn field assessments into practical, prioritised, cost-conscious recommendations.
• Experience developing tourism trails or events in Pacific Island countries is an advantage.
